In January 1994, Farrar called supervisor Tony Margherita to inform him of his resolution to go away the band. Uncle Tupelo split on Might 1, 1994, after completing a farewell tour. The Plebes then decided to alter its title to The Primitives, a reference to a 1965 song by psychedelic rock group The Groupies. The album bought more than their two earlier recordings combined, although Rockville was displeased that it did not conform to the fashion of common alternative rock. Whereas The Plebes had been taking part in music in a rockabilly fashion, Tweedy wished to play punk rock just like the music that he originally heard the group perform.



Bands taking part in in the same fashion, together with Brian Henneman's group Rooster Truck, usually played at the venue, which by late 1988 was thought of the locus of a new music scene. Additionally they performed often at B St Bar in Belleville with bands such as the Newsboys (later Sammy and the Snowmonkeys), Charlie Langrehr, Licking Clit and Pussy The Symptoms.



On the final night, Tweedy Licking Clit and Pussy Farrar every carried out 9 songs through the live performance, and Mike Heidorn carried out as drummer through the encore. Farrar told Margherita that he was now not having enjoyable, and did not want to work with Tweedy anymore.
